Ministry Rhythms: Finding Rest in a Culture of Overwork
Introduction
If the grass looks greener elsewhere, maybe it’s time to water your own. Modern church culture often exalts the bride (the church) while sidelining the groom (Christ). Combine this with the relentless Protestant work ethic, and burnout becomes inevitable.
The Problem: A Culture of Exhaustion
- 38% of pastors have considered leaving ministry in the past year.
- We equate hard work with holiness, believing everything depends on us.
- Common coping strategies—taking a break, seeking balance, or delegating—don’t solve the root issue.
The Solution: Biblical Rhythms
God designed rest:
- Genesis 2:1-3 – He modeled it.
- Exodus 20:8-11 – He commanded it.
- Mark 2:27-28 – He made it for us.
Neglecting rest is as serious as any other sin. The real issue? We don’t trust God to handle what we leave undone. But maybe He can bless six obedient days more than seven disobedient ones.
The Plan: Start Small, Build Rhythm
- Annually: Take 1-3 weeks for rest, hobbies, and planning.
- Every seven weeks: Step away for a weekend. Let others lead. Be refreshed.
- Weekly: Set aside a true Sabbath—sleep, pray, eat, be present.
- Daily: Guard time for yourself and your family.
The church doesn’t own you. You serve it, but Jesus is your master. Let Him lead your rhythms.
